Iconic Hollywood Sign Altered

The New Year started off very interesting in Hollywood, CA. Around 2 am PST, a prankster managed to climb Mount Lee and alter the iconic Hollywood sign to read “Hollyweed”.

According to officers of the L.A. Police Department Security Service Division, the vandal covered up the O’s to read as E’s using tarp. The vandal was caught on security-camera footage between midnight and 2 a.m. local time, but police can’t tell his race or height because it was dark and raining, Garcia said.

There are sensors at the sign that trigger an alarm for police, but because the sensors are only in certain areas of the letters, it’s possible to avoid them. There’s a road accessible to the public by foot and car behind the sign. “We believe this person came from behind the sign,” Garcia said.

Betsy Isroelit with the Hollywood Sign Trust says the last time the sign was vandalized to read “Hollyweed” was on Jan. 1, 1976  another day California adopted more relaxed marijuana laws. Cal State Northridge arts student Danny Finegood also altered the sign to read “Hollyweed.” The prank earned him an A for a class assignment.

He later returned to change it to “Holywood” and “Ollywood.” He was never charged with a crime, but city officials eventually stepped up security around the state’s most famous sign.
